Chair Schneider Mourns Loss of Life in Potomac Tragedy, Strongly Condemns Trump’s Disgraceful Response
Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) issued a statement on last night’s midair collision in Washington, D.C., which killed all 67 individuals aboard American Airlines Flight 5342 and the military helicopter involved in the crash:
“New Dems join the American people in mourning the tragic loss of life in the aviation crash last night. Our thoughts are with the victims and those who lost loved ones, and we extend our deepest gratitude to the first responders who continue tirelessly conducting search and rescue operations and to the officials investigating this disaster.
“As more details emerge and we await the results of a comprehensive investigation, I am saddened and appalled by President Trump’s callous use of this national tragedy as an opportunity to baselessly attack and blame his political opponents and amplify extremist culture wars.
“The vast majority of Americans – Republican and Democrat – want solutions, not retribution. President Trump's pathetic rhetoric does nothing to make our communities safer, comfort the victims’ families, or assist ongoing investigations. Instead, the president turned his back on uniting our country and failed to lead with the compassion or common sense this moment needed.
“New Dems join Leader Jeffries and all of our House Democrats in pledging to ensure the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have every resource necessary to investigate this tragedy and ensure the safety of all the American people.”
